World’s Highest Railway Bridge: All You Need to Know

Chenab River Bridge With Parameters: Fabulous World
World’s highest Railway Bridge is coming up in Jammu and Kashmir, India at the height of 359 meters above the bed level. This 359 meters high Bridge is the only one which is 5 times bigger than the great monument Qutub Minar (India) and35 meters taller than the famous Eiffel Tower (France). This bridge is being built on the river Chenab in Reasi valley. To know all about the bridge (construction, Statics, Records follow the post and continue reading ahead………..

Introduction to the Arch Bridge on Chenab

The bridge discussed above is a under construction bridge in Reasi district of Jammu Kashmir, India which is being built on Chenab River hence named as Chenab Bridge. The Chenab Bridge is a arch based bridge which will connect Bakkal and Kauri in Reasi District. Construction of this bridge will be completed in year 2015 and this bridge will be recorded as world’s highest railway bridge in Guinness book of records. This Bridge will be opened for traffic by December which will be a great source for communicating Baramulla to Srinagar.

Features

This bridge is having so many unique features which make it different. The design of the bridge ensures its capability to withstand the blasts as well as the seismic movements. While the signaling arrangement will ensure that the train does not encounter the high wind velocity at this height. An anemometer is provided at the bridge sight which will measure the wind speed at bridge site and automatically will interlock train movement over bridge if there is any wind above specified speed. The Train can cruise at 100 kmph on structure which will have life span of 120 years.

  • The bridge is having all safety aspects that it could withstand terror and weather attacks.
  • The design of the bridge is made in such a way that if any of the element of the bridge structure is removed then the traffic could still remain open restricted at a speed of 30 kmph.
  • If one column gives away, even then the deck will not collapse.
  • It would be possible to restore the structure to its original condition after carrying out required repairs while having traffic open at the same time.
  • This bridge would be able to withstand a 40 kgs blast.

Statics of the Bridge after Completion

This carries the Kashmir railway. On the date of completion the bridge statics will be as further

Design type: Arch Bridge.

Materials: Steel and Concrete.
Length: 1,263 meters (4,144 ft).
Height: 359 meters from river bed.
Number of Spans: 17
Longest Span: 480 meters (1,570 ft)

Construction of the Bridge

Construction will be done by building the arch outward from both sides of the canyon using the stayed cantilever method. This technique was also used for the similar design of the New River Gorge Bridge in West Virginia, U.S.A. The uneven sides of the gorge will result in one side of the arch terminating into the foundation 40 feet (12 meters) higher than the other side.
Whenever the Chenab bridge will be completed, it will not be a bridge but a prestigious symbol of concentrated hard work of the engineers and architects contributing to it. The approaching spans were competed years before the construction of main arch starts.

Finally we can say that during construction of Chenab Bridge all of the safety factors and other aspects are properly considered for perfectness of the structure. This bridge will be a great connection between these towns in the mountains of Himalaya. If this project will be successful in this greatest natural barrier (mountains of Himalaya) then this will be a great achievement.
