This post contains a brief view of construction and operation of Hong-Kong
International Airport. Construction of airport is done over 12.48 km²between
two islands Chek Lap Kok and Lam Chau. The construction work has been completed
in HK $ 20 billion including construction of an airport, 22 miles of highway
including two long span bridges, one tunnel and highway on coastal edge of sea
water after expansion of hills into water. In 2012, Hong-Kong International
airport is considered as a main contributor to the Hong-Kong’s economy with
approx more than 100 airline operators operating flights for more than 180
destinations worldwide. A brief view on the construction of this ambitious
project of civil engineering is given here….
HISTORY OF
PROJECT
According
to the joint declaration of prime minister of United Kingdom and premier of
People ’s Republic of china on 19 December 1984, People's Republic of China
Government stated that it had decided to resume the exercise of sovereignty
over Hong Kong (including Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, and the New Territories)
with effect from 1 July 1997 and the United Kingdom Government declared that it
would restore Hong Kong to the PRC with effect from 1 July 1997.
At
that time Hong Kong International airport was situated (known as Kai Tak
airport) at densely populated Kowloon City. Expansion of totally surrounded Kai
Tak airport was not possible because of building all around it. At this busiest
airport, a single runway and the lesser space was not satisfactory resulting in
delay in every third flight and discomfort to the passengers. Rather than this
all accidents caused due to congestion of airport was also a reason which
caused the government to transfer the Airport to somewhere else. So after a
long time, planning study by the Hong Kong Civil Aviation and Public Works
department suggested a small island Chek Lap Kok for this purpose. This island
was away from the densely populated town while providing route for flights over
South China sea.
INTRODUCTION TO THE PROJECT
In 1989 governor of hong kong announced a
development stratergy which was about transferring the airport from Kai Tak to
Chek Lap Kok island. The construction of this project was to be completed
before hand over to People ’s Republic of China means before January
1997.Construction of the airport started in 1991. Now objectives enlisted in
front of the constructors were
1. Construction of Airport.
2. Connecting Airport with populated areas.
Under first objective, the goal was little a
bit typical because the construction was to be carried out on the islands Chek Lap Kok and Lam Chau (3.02 km²
and 0.08 km²). Area of both of the Islands were too small hence area was
increased by leveling both of these islands and forming an wider artificial
island reclaiming 9.38 km² area of seabed. So formed Site of airport was 12.48
km² which increased the area nearly by 1% of total surface area of hong kong.
When it’s about second objective, it was not
also so easy to achieve. Connecting airport to the town was a challenging work
including construction of a 22 miles of highway including construction of
tunnel, brides or elevated road sections and most important the land
reclamation. For this highway the sea shore was extended nearby half mile on
seabed. A single highway was not sufficient hence a railway track with a ultra
speed train was also provided.
This project was the most expansive Airport
Construction project ever according to Guinness world records. Construction of
this project was enlisted in top 10 Construction achievements of 20th
century.

International Airport: Construction. This post is all about the construction
techniques and methods used in building this airport including underwater
tunnel, World’s largest double decker suspension bridge and reclamation of land
at coastal line by expanding on seabed.
